Here is a website set up to accompany an event co-organized with Anthony Iles at the Serpentine Gallery, London in June 2007. We were invited by Whitechapel Project Space, which put on a weekend at the gallery as part of the Local Operations season. A further event took place in Kennington Park, London in July 2007 as part of the alt.SPACE Festival 2007.
In opposition to the histories of great men and institutions, ‘history from below’ aimed to show how working people had agency within historical events; produced themselves, their culture and an analysis of their own conditions. Anthony Iles and Tom Roberts take up the legacy and problems of the project of making ‘history from below’.
We put together a pamphlet to build up a critical picture of the value of ‘history from below’, featuring selected extracts and our own commentaries. Please feel free to download it (PDF version here).
